Choke

The purpose of the choke technique is to make the strumming pattern more interesting.

As you are strumming down a chord, place the palm of your hand onto the string thus stopping the sound of the chord from ringing out, as indicated in the video above


Using a Capo

A lot of contemporary songs use the capo. The purpose of the capo is for the player to avoid playing barre chords, which are difficult to hold.

Put the capo on the indicated fret. The first fret starts from where you place the capo. Play the indicated chords relative to the placement of the capo.
